Brain injury & neurobehavioral care
Thirty years with the patients other programs decline
Lakeview is a state-certified neurobehavioral rehabilitation program and the only certified long term acute care hospital in Wisconsin for our neurorehabilitation program areas. When personality change, emotional dysregulation, and lost behavioral control are the most disabling part of a brain injury, this is the work we were built for.
Why it is hard
The most disabling effects are rarely the ones on the imaging
The effects of acquired brain injury are complex: threats to medical stability, loss of independent functioning, reduced mobility, and diminished cognitive capacity. But the effects most disabling to the person — and most burdensome to the family — often involve changes to personality, loss of emotional regulation, and diminished behavioral control.
Those symptoms are exactly what causes placements to fail elsewhere. Our multidisciplinary team is trained and staffed specifically to support them, in an environment that can be individually modified as recovery progresses.
Programs
Four pathways, one campus
Neurorehabilitation program
Begins with a comprehensive evaluation of each person's pattern of cognitive, emotional, and physical strengths and limitations, then builds an individualized plan aimed at maximum independence and the person's own goals.
Neurobehavioral program
Safe, supervised, secured treatment environments designed around the person. Early in recovery, a neuropsychologist tailors a plan that guides consistent interventions from care staff, starting with what can be done without failure and building from those successes.
Coma recovery program
Structured medical management and graded sensory programming for patients with disorders of consciousness, with family education at every stage.
Community re-entry
For those ready for four or more hours of rehabilitation per day, individual and group therapy targets memory, attention, strength, dexterity, and balance, plus cooking, everyday living skills, and social pragmatics.
How we practice
Our clinical guardrails
Neurobehavioral does not mean behavioral only
Most people we admit carry real medical complexity alongside behavioral symptoms — trachs, seizures, wounds, dysphagia, polypharmacy. Our hospital license lets us treat both at once.
Behavior is communication
Agitation, disinhibition, and refusal are treated as data about pain, environment, and unmet needs — not as reasons to discharge.
One team, one plan
Neuropsychology, physiatry, nursing, therapy, and direct care staff work from a single behavior support plan so the response a patient gets at 2 a.m. matches the one at 2 p.m.
Families are part of treatment
Case management and neuropsychology educate and support families through rehabilitation and planning for what comes after Lakeview.
Continuum
Brain injury recovery rarely happens in one setting
A patient may begin in our long term acute care hospital, move into inpatient rehabilitation, step down to a CBRF home, and continue with therapy and counseling through our outpatient clinic and Behavioral Health Clinic. One organization, one record, no re-intake.
